What follows is rage and retaliation. They will become annoyed that you are doing this to them, making them feel this way. Seriously, how dare you? That’s how the narcissist thinks. They wonder why you can’t just revert to your previous behavior.
They react with intense anger, believing that they are entitled to make you feel bad. Because you are not obeying or conforming to their expectations, they feel this is their opportunity to punish you. They forget that you are done. All of these outbursts resemble childish behavior—like a toddler throwing a tantrum because someone didn’t behave the way they wanted.
They show their inability to engage in mature behavior, failing to communicate openly and honestly. Instead, they respond with anger, putting you down and pushing you further away. You become indifferent to what they say. They might try to provoke you into reacting, but you are no longer playing that game. You are taking control by giving them a response that says you’re not coming back.
