When a narcissist can’t control you directly, they’ll try to manipulate how others see you. They’ll reach out to friends, family, and acquaintances—anyone who’ll listen—to gather information they can twist and use against you. They spread lies, fabricating an opposing narrative, trying to harm your reputation. Why? Because they are nervous. They don’t want you to flourish or realize your potential, as it threatens their self-worth. By attempting to isolate you, they’re hoping you’ll feel defeated. Yet remember, the people who are easily swayed weren’t true connections in the first place, so the narcissist has done you a favor by revealing them. Stay silent, as your silence is what ultimately unsettles them.
3. Appeasement and Flattery Tactics
When they realize they can’t win, they might try to flatter you excessively or offer unusual compliments. They may even try to infiltrate your inner circle to “stay close” with the hidden agenda of manipulating you. Once they gain access and trust, they’ll play mind games, often subtly undermining you so it’s hard to prove. It’s a tactic called plausible deniability. Behind a mask of kindness, they’re actually conniving, as their lack of conscience allows them to cross any boundary. Notice their shift from excessive kindness to cruelty, which is their true nature showing through.
