This is their big talent. Why? Because they know how to convince you that they are being tortured, either by you or by others. It’s not just that they tell you a sob story; they shape the environment so that you naturally feel pity for them. “Oh, poor him! Poor her!” They want you to save them, to fix the situation. However, deep down, they do not want to be saved because being saved would mean giving up that title and that skill.
Nobody can be a better victim than a narcissist who seeks collective sympathy. They want everyone to cry for them, and that is their talent. Can you do that? Can you gather attention and garner supply from groups, making them think you are suffering? No, that thought repels you. I know you do not want to be seen as a powerless person because that is not who you are.
However, a narcissist wants others to feel that way toward them. Why? Because it makes them feel special. That is the inverted narcissism—an evil super talent you can never possess.
