They only listen to parts of any conversation that support their narrative. What is their narrative? “I didn’t play any role in creating this problem; I have nothing to do with this issue.” If anyone is wrong, it’s the person trying to confront them. They see themselves as innocent souls who cannot cause harm. They keep this narrative alive by distorting information, selectively listening to words.
For example, “Oh, you said it this way!” “Oh, you used the wrong word!” “Oh, you cornered me when I was coming back from work!” They have many excuses to justify their own victimhood and label you as the villain in their life. Can you do that? Can you selectively listen and pick and choose the parts that support your narrative? You can’t and you won’t. Why? Because that is unfair. Your conscience will kick in and start troubling you; your super ego will ask you, “What are you doing here?”
That inner voice guides you, and if it is overly developed, it will reprimand you and shame you. That’s how things work for non-narcissistic individuals. But for narcissists, that voice is suppressed; it always favors them and their narrative.
