6. Feeling Vulnerable
Narcissists hate feeling vulnerable and weak, especially if they think others are laughing at them or looking down on them. A study published in Personality and Individual Differences showed that though they enjoy laughing at others, they become furious and insensitive when others laugh at them. Instead of bordering on cruelty to get back at others, they’ll criticize everything about them—their clothes, hobbies, personality traits, and even appearances.
7. Stealing
Psychologist Seth Meers explains that narcissists believe they are deserving of adoration and attention and that others should acknowledge them as extra special and superior. They hate to see someone else become the focus of attention and steal their limelight, a feeling that extends to everyone around them. If a friend or coworker receives accolades from others, they will try to belittle their achievement. This all comes down to the narcissist’s need to be the center of attention at all times and how much they hate to lose that feeling.
