Despite feeling inadequate inside, narcissists always believe they’re better than everyone else. They often express this by insulting, mocking, or attacking others, or by boasting and lying about their own achievements. Their goal is to make themselves look superior, to impress and manipulate people. On the flip side, they may idolize those they see as powerful or useful, but they still have contempt for everyone. Narcissists despise anyone they perceive as weaker or less valuable. Ironically, they often claim they’re the ones who genuinely deserve admiration. So, if a narcissist is mean to you, it might be because they see you as special or useful to them.
Narcissists can’t handle criticism.
Narcissists struggle with criticism. Whether it’s constructive or not, they just can’t handle it. Criticism hits them hard, even if they don’t show it. They often react with emotional turmoil, unable to keep their cool. If you dare to criticize them and they don’t like it, get ready for a fight. They’ll try to bully you into changing your opinion or turn against you entirely. It can feel pointless to try and talk things out with them because they’re so focused on themselves. So what can you do to avoid butting heads with a narcissist?
