Narcissists don’t like being discarded. They want to be the ones to discard you, as they see people as objects they can dispose of at will. If you are the one who discards them, congratulations—you’ve given them the greatest injury imaginable. They cannot accept that their existence was so insignificant to you that you left them behind. This shakes their belief in their omnipotence and superiority.
Your act of leaving them sets off their insecurities. They may try to hoover you back, not because they’ve changed or want to regain your love, but to satisfy their need for control. If you have already left a narcissist and they are trying to pull you back, resist the temptation to return. You’ve done the right thing.
4. When They’re Proven Wrong
Narcissists are rigid and self-righteous, believing they are always right and that everyone else is wrong. They think they know everything and have nothing left to learn. But as we both know, that is completely flawed. No one knows everything, and there is always room for learning.
When they are proven wrong, especially by you, their primary victim, it shakes them to the core. Narcissists cannot accept being defeated, especially by someone they view as inferior. This deeply injures their ego and leaves them in a state of denial, as winning is essential to their sense of self-worth. Defeat is not something they can comprehend.
