Living with a narcissist is like living inside a loud construction zone, but somehow even worse. The crazy part is: they do not even have to scream or yell at you to make it that noisy. They use simple everyday sounds as a secret weapon.

They can control your feelings just by how hard they close drawers or how loudly they walk down the hall. They use noise to take over the space and keep you in a state of panic. You never get to truly rest because they use sound to make sure you never forget they are the boss and that they are around.

Numbe One: slamming kitchen cabinets and drawers. When they are angry, they do not always say it. Instead, they walk into the kitchen and start slamming the heavy wooden cabinet doors. They push the drawers in so hard that the whole room shakes. This loud noise is a warning. It tells everybody in the house that a bad mood has arrived.

You hear that slam and your heart drops. You know you have to be extra careful now. It feels like you’re trapped in a cage with an angry bear. You just want the noise to stop.

Number two: heavy, punishing footsteps on the floor. You can always tell how a narcissist is feeling just by listening to their feet. When they are mad, they stop. They walk up the stairs or down the hall with heavy, loud steps. They want the floorboards to creak and groan.

This heavy walking makes the whole house feel tense. It is their way of saying, “I am coming, and you better be ready.” It makes you freeze and fear. You hold your breath until they pass by. You feel like a tiny mouse hiding from a giant.
