2. Entitlement Entitlement tends to follow naturally from superiority. People with narcissistic tendencies often feel they deserve respect, regardless of whether they’ve earned it. They may believe they’re entitled to an apology, a raise, a better position, or even your seat on a plane, while not considering the perspective of others.
3. Need for Attention Narcissists have a strong need for attention and struggle when they aren’t the focal point. Events like weddings, birthdays, or other celebrations of someone else’s achievements can be difficult for them. They may try to redirect attention to themselves, whether by talking over someone giving a speech, starting arguments, or creating drama.
4. Need for Control A narcissist’s need for control is driven by their desire to maintain a facade of perfection and superiority. They may use manipulation techniques, such as gaslighting (“You’re not remembering that correctly”) or love bombing (overwhelming someone with affection) to get what they want. If manipulation doesn’t work, they might enlist others to participate in their “smear campaigns”—people who unwittingly join in on blaming or shaming others.
5. Lack of Boundaries A significant trait of narcissism is a disregard for boundaries. Because they crave control, they may struggle to recognize where they end and others begin. This lack of boundaries can be especially harmful in relationships, where they may see others as mere extensions of themselves. For example, a narcissistic parent might view their child’s achievements or failures as direct reflections of themselves.
6. Refusal to Take Responsibility Narcissists are incapable of offering a sincere apology or taking responsibility when things go wrong. They are quick to find scapegoats or shift blame because admitting fault would threaten the carefully maintained facade.
