You have to be unpredictable not only action-wise but emotionally as well. They should not be able to know what you’re actually feeling. If you feel a lot of fear, you have to keep a blank face. This is where the stare and blink technique comes in. You have to stare—not in an intense way, but just keep your eyes quite relaxed. They should not be able to know what emotions you’re experiencing because of what they’re saying. Keep it suppressed; keep your body relaxed. Then, when they attack or try to push a button, instead of reacting almost instantly, you can blink at least seven times before responding. Something like this: when you do this, you are essentially distracting yourself, giving your nervous system some space to calm down. You are also not giving them the instant high they need from you. You are creating some space for yourself to think about how to respond appropriately, how to redirect that energy, and channel it into a proper response instead of reacting and feeding their need for instant supply and instant gratification. By blinking like this, you can almost instantly disarm them because they don’t know what’s going on.
See, the mixture of unpredictability with this blank-faced stare manifested as a blink response means they can’t read you, they can’t guess what you’re up to. Then, what you can do is, at the end of it, add one simple question that can drive them nuts or drive them away. That question could be, “Are you okay?” The hidden message in this question is: “The way you’re behaving is unacceptable. It’s so immature; you’re making a fool out of yourself, so I’m concerned. Are you okay? Do we need to talk about this sometime later when you would be more stable?” That question triggers a narcissist’s shame.
