The third reason a narcissist would want you to fail is for validation. This stems from the narcissist’s lack of empathy. They take pleasure in your pain and struggles, as your failings and sufferings act as validation of their own self-worth or importance. When you are at your lowest, they are at their highest.
The fourth reason a narcissist would want you to fail is envy. Narcissists are often envious of others, especially those who possess qualities, successes, or happiness that they lack. If they perceive you as having something they don’t, they will want to see you fail because your failure relieves their envy. The fifth reason a narcissist would want you to fail is due to projection of their own pain. Many narcissists project their feelings of insecurity, inadequacy, or failure onto others. If they feel unworthy or unsuccessful, they may project those emotions onto you, wanting you to fail or suffer to avoid confronting their own inner turmoil. Your failures serve as a distraction because narcissists prefer to look outward rather than inward when it comes to their own shortcomings.
