In conclusion, a narcissist’s desire for you to fail or experience pain often stems from their own insecurities, a need for control, a lack of empathy, and an inability to handle others’ success or happiness. Your failures serve to boost their fragile self-esteem while keeping you in a subordinate or dependent position. Narcissists seek to stifle your growth, well-being, and happiness. That is why it is always best to keep your distance from the narcissist as much as possible. Even with those narcissists you cannot avoid due to shared custody, work, etc., you can still limit their influence in your life.
