Narcissists have an unending desire for control and power. They want to control the narrative around them—not just people, but also events. They love routine and familiarity because these give them a sense of control over their lives and their image.
Reality, in the form of unpredictable or uncontrollable situations, is a threat to that control. It could be something as simple as a road closure or as significant as losing a source of supply. Any unexpected change to a narcissist’s routine or life that they did not orchestrate is a major threat to their sense of control.
They also become agitated or enraged when others assert their own perspectives or refuse to accept the narcissist’s version of events. Such unpredictable realities are often too much for a narcissist to handle, disrupting their delusions of control and power.
