Protecting the Fantasy: How Narcissists Defend Their Delusions

Now that we understand why reality is a threat, let’s look at how narcissists respond to these threats and fight to keep their delusions alive.

  1. Denial and Distortion
Narcissists often deny facts and twist reality to fit their narrative. They might dismiss obvious truths or misrepresent situations to avoid acknowledging anything that threatens their self-image.
  2. Gaslighting
They use gaslighting as a tool to make others question their perception of reality. By subtly or overtly challenging others’ memories or interpretations, narcissists maintain control and reinforce their preferred narrative.
  3. Projection
Narcissists project their flaws onto others, accusing them of the very behaviors they are guilty of. This helps them deflect responsibility and shift the focus away from their shortcomings.
  4. Devalue and Discard
When someone continues to challenge their reality, narcissists often devalue that person. They may criticize, belittle, rage, or even cut ties with individuals who see through their façade and refuse to validate their preferred image.
  5. Double Down on Grandiosity
Narcissists may boast more, assert their superiority, or seek admiration to reinforce their fragile self-image. By pushing to be seen, heard, or recognized, they attempt to gain narcissistic supply and rebuild their ego.

Closing Thoughts

A narcissist’s resistance to reality creates a cycle of manipulation and denial that affects not only others but also themselves. Their inability to face reality prevents genuine self-improvement and the formation of authentic relationships. Narcissists sabotage their own lives, and in this video, I discussed the different ways they do so.
