Narcissists are hypocrites. They often fail to align their actions with their words. Pointing out inconsistencies exposes the gap between their self-image and reality. For example, if they claim to be generous but act selfishly, highlighting this disparity disrupts their constructed identity.
Expect deflection, denial, gaslighting, or accusations of being overly critical. Stay calm and firm—do not let them bamboozle you. Keep your points direct and simple.
3. Not Reacting to Provocations
Narcissists thrive on provoking emotional reactions to feel powerful and in control. By refusing to react, you deprive them of this validation. This may cause them to escalate their behavior or withdraw temporarily to “punish” you with silence.
Ignore their tactics and focus on living your life. If their behavior becomes threatening, report them, but do not allow them to manipulate your emotions.
4. Calling Out Lies and False Pretenses
Narcissists rely on deception to construct their public image. Challenging their lies with facts or evidence threatens to expose the gap between their reality and their narrative. This can provoke intense defensiveness, anger, or even rage.
When confronting their lies, it’s best to have a witness for safety. A narcissist will find it harder to discredit multiple people instead of one.
