They constantly compare themselves to others, feeling entitled to the success or recognition others have achieved. Covert narcissists will often criticize others behind their backs, attributing their success to luck or unfair advantages. This envious behavior is a key indicator of their narcissism, though they rarely show this side to the public.
Sabotage One of the more damaging traits of a covert narcissist is their tendency to sabotage relationships and work environments. While they may present as friendly and supportive on the surface, covert narcissists often go behind your back to spread lies, take credit for your work, or plant seeds of doubt in your relationships. If you’ve ever experienced a co-worker or friend subtly undermining your efforts, there’s a chance they could be a covert narcissist.
Victim Mentality Covert narcissists often present themselves as victims, using this tactic to gain sympathy and manipulate others into taking care of them. They may constantly have excuses for why they can’t meet their responsibilities, blaming circumstances beyond their control. This victim stance can be confusing for empathetic individuals, who feel compelled to help the narcissist without realizing they are being used.
