One particularly deceptive tactic, which I personally find very annoying, is when they copy others’ beliefs or values. Whether political or religious, they usually do this to gain trust or fit in socially. Their moral stances are often based on what is trendy or what can garner more attention or admiration. Narcissists are very fickle; they have no true foundation and basically just go with the wind when it comes to their beliefs or values. They will claim to believe whatever you believe in order to get close to you and win your trust.
An obvious sign that a narcissist is copying you is when they adopt your personal appearance and style. Whether it’s the way you dress, your hairstyle, your makeup, fitness routine, accessories, or car, this is usually a clear sign that the narcissist is not just mimicking you but competing with you.
Last but not least are interests and hobbies—be it music, movies, books, photography, sewing, or cooking. Whatever it is that gets someone else lots of attention and admiration, the narcissist will try to emulate that, even down to someone’s career ambitions and personal goals if they seem impressive or socially valuable. Basically, nothing is off-limits when it comes to a narcissist mirroring you.
Now let’s look at the signs to note if a narcissist is indeed mirroring you. The number one thing to look out for is when it is too much, too soon. This is when they overnight adopt your interests, values, or lifestyle. They may throw around terms like “soulmate” or “twin flame,” accompanied by intense flattery, to make it seem as if you are both destined to be in each other’s lives. But when it is all said and done, no true connections are formed; it is all an illusion. The narcissist has no true passion or understanding of the so-called shared hobbies or interests that they claim to have with you.
Also, be sure to look out for any inconsistencies when they are around other people, because you may not be the only person they are trying to impress. As a result, they will shift like a chameleon. Their personality and interests are likely to adjust to match who they are around.
