The second thing a narcissist wants to hear from you is your secrets. They want to know your deepest, darkest thoughts or experiences—things you’ve never told another living soul. But you should never confide in a narcissist. Whether it’s past hurts, weaknesses, or anything sentimental, do not share it with a narcissist. They are very good at extracting information because they can be so convincing. They may make you believe they care or empathize, but they don’t. The narcissist is not your friend, no matter how charming or friendly they may seem at times.

The narcissist will use this information against you, even if not immediately. They will wait for the right moment to throw it back in your face. And don’t think for a second they’ll keep it to themselves—they’ll often hint at things to leave a negative impression about you in others’ minds. It doesn’t matter if the narcissist is your sibling, parent, pastor, or anyone else—do not trust them with your secrets.
