Number four: The one word that narcissists particularly hate is happiness. This is bizarre because happiness is a natural emotion. However, their anger often manifests in subtle ways. For example, if you’re out with friends and genuinely having fun, they might give you a look of contempt that makes you question your joy. Narcissists can’t experience genuine happiness, so when they see you thriving, they feel the need to bring you down to their level, creating confusion and frustration for you.
Number five: A bizarre situation I encountered was a mother who was not allowed to let her husband know she was kissing their kids goodnight. Her daughter would signal when it was time, and the mother would have to lie, saying she was going to the bathroom, as if simply showing affection was a transgression. Malignant narcissists view emotional connections with others as threats. They can’t form authentic emotional bonds themselves, so they resent it when you can.
Number six: Being proud of a talent is another trigger. A malignant narcissist will make you feel selfish or arrogant for celebrating your own achievements. They thrive on being the center of attention and will only appreciate your talents if they can take credit for them. I’ve seen many situations where a narcissistic partner tries to redirect praise to themselves, claiming credit for your success. It’s confusing and frustrating because it erases your effort and dedication.
