The third reason why narcissists help people or act nice is to maintain a certain image.
Some narcissists would prefer to go into debt to make others think they have a lot of money. They want to give the impression or maintain the impression that they are successful and being generous is a sign that they may have more than enough. They may also want to maintain the image of the person who always pays for the meal or buys the drinks in social settings. The person who gives the biggest tithes and offerings in the church. Or the person who is always available to help or donate to a cause. The narcissist is basically more concerned about their public image or reputation than those they claim to help. It is never about the other person; it is only about protecting the narcissist’s reputation or image.
The fourth reason why narcissists help people is that there is some sort of monetary value attached.
We have to remember that narcissists do nothing for free. So, even when it may seem that the narcissist is being generous with their time or information, you can be sure there is a price tag attached. And the narcissist cares more about what they are getting than what they are giving. As I discussed in this article, money is a major motivator for narcissists. They can never have enough and will keep pushing for more and more opportunities to bring in that money under the false banner of wanting to help others.
But to conclude, narcissists are notoriously selfish individuals.
They only care about themselves and how others can cater to massaging their egos. Narcissists view life as a game and people as pawns that they can manipulate, abuse, and control. Their reasons for helping others must give them something in return or it is not worth doing. And when they do not get what they were after as a result of being nice or helping someone, they frown and sulk at their loss because if they are not profiting, no one else should.
