Narcissists Tend to See You as a Threat
Narcissists hide many things, burying them deep, and never want you to discover them. It’s not uncommon for a narcissist to perceive everyone as a threat. They have a high degree of paranoia and are constantly afraid that their cherished persona, which is fake, will be uncovered. Therefore, they are always alert and desperately need to be in control to create a safe sanctuary for themselves. Their life is a competition, and they feel that others are constantly watching, waiting for them to reveal their secrets. They often project their fear onto others, believing that everyone is just as vulnerable as they are. For them, it’s a game where they must strike first to avoid being destroyed later.
Narcissists Fear Rejection and Abandonment
These two fears are among the greatest for a narcissist. The fear of rejection is particularly dangerous as it can cause someone to lose interest in them. The fear of abandonment means losing control over a relationship, especially if their partner decides to leave before the relationship is over. Narcissists struggle to understand their partner’s disappointment and feel devalued when faced with the possibility of rejection. They believe they are indispensable to their partners and will use their power to manipulate anyone who disagrees with them.
Narcissists Are Afraid You Will Expose Them
Narcissists lie to hide their insecurities and will do whatever they can to maintain this facade. They fear that others will discover the truth and expose their vulnerabilities, leading them to manipulate people and situations to avoid being unmasked.
Narcissists Fear Losing Control
When dealing with a narcissist, you may notice that they constantly display anxiety, which they project onto you. They might accuse you of being negative, unsupportive, or selfish as a way to deflect from their own feelings of anxiety about the relationship. The more anxious they become, the more resentful they feel toward you. They will do whatever it takes to maintain control and prevent anyone from discovering the truth.
