This is a lie that many narcissists tell to gain sympathy and trust from their victims. They will promise anything to make you think they have changed, but they never do. Narcissists don’t change because they feel entitled to be the way they are, so why would they try to change? They just want to keep you around to continue using you for their own benefit. Narcissists are incapable of change because their infatuation with themselves prevents them from seeing anything wrong with their behavior or personality. They are also incapable of empathy and therefore unable to feel guilt or remorse over any hurtful things they may have done in the past or might do in the future.
Narcissists tell not just little white lies but outrageous lies designed to keep you under their thumbs and in their control. These lies differ in degree of obviousness and complexity and serve many purposes, but the motives behind them are always the same: maintaining, verifying, propping up, and protecting their narcissistic supply source.
