Number three: Tell the truth — radically and without apology.
Few things unsettle a narcissist like someone who simply refuses to lie, soften, or perform. Narcissists are fluent in deception. Radical honesty is a foreign language to them, and it shows. When you stop telling them what they want to hear and start saying what’s actually true — calmly, directly, without drama — they squirm. They back themselves into corners they can’t escape. They disappear. The truth has a way of winning every time, even when it takes a while.
Number four: Treat them with indifference.
Contempt is a narcissist’s weapon of choice. They wield it freely. But receive it back? They fall apart. When they realize their presence registers as nothing to you — no excitement, no fear, no admiration, no irritation — they have no idea what to do. Indifference communicates something they genuinely cannot process: you don’t matter enough to affect me.
Number five: Reject them.
Beneath the confidence and the bravado is an ego so fragile it needs constant external validation just to hold its shape. Rejection — real, quiet, unhesitating rejection — cuts right through the performance. When you make it clear that their opinion has no sway over you, that their tactics don’t impress you, and that you’re simply not interested, they know exactly what’s happening. And they have no framework for handling it.
Number six: Expose them — calmly and publicly.
Put them on the spot in front of others. This doesn’t require drama. A single well-placed sentence is enough. When they spread toxic gossip: “That sounds like a personal problem. Probably best to keep it to yourself.” When they’re being passive aggressive: “Did you just roll your eyes? Good to know.” Then stop. Say nothing more. You’ve highlighted exactly what they are. Let them do the rest — they usually will.
