When you’re dealing with someone who’s a narcissist, there’s often a familiar pattern that arises. You might have figured out ways to cope with the stress and difficulties that come with this kind of relationship. Maybe you’ve even learned strategies to sidestep conflicts and keep things from getting too chaotic. But since narcissists thrive on their own dysfunction, they can’t keep it in check forever. Eventually, something will happen that ruffles their feathers, and suddenly, they unleash a torrent of anger on you.

For instance, think about a coworker who always wants the spotlight and expects special treatment. For a time, you can play along with their game, but then one day, you might say something contrary, and that can provoke their wrath. Or maybe during a family get-together, you share your opinion on a topic, and the narcissist gets super offended, leading to a loud lecture intended to put you down. Even though they seem full of themselves, narcissists are quite sensitive and can’t handle your independence. Lacking inner peace, they rely heavily on you to bow to them as they seek validation. Over time, it becomes clear that they don’t have the strength to resolve conflicts effectively. Their intense reactions to your differing view highlight what’s known as narcissistic collapse.

Not able to connect with those who think differently, they feel compelled to impose their views on everyone else. They resist going along with the crowd when others are too distinct, so they take it upon themselves to downplay or overbear your perspectives. When you don’t give in, the divide between you and the narcissist can become permanent.
