Reason 3: Painting a Bad Picture of You
Narcissists love painting a bad picture of you in front of others. Let’s say they want to create fake evidence against you. They’ll trigger a fight, wait for your reaction, and then record you non-consensually. They’ll store that reaction and present it in court, showing only one side of the story. While recording, they’ll stay calm, watching you lose it, but they’ll never record the attempts they made to trigger you. By only presenting one aspect of the narrative, they paint you as the bad guy.
Unfortunately, the legal system and other people who don’t understand—or don’t want to understand—the depths of narcissistic abuse often believe them. This is how you lose, not just financially, but sometimes physically, psychologically, and emotionally as well. By projecting a false image of you, they get to play the victim. “Oh, look at me, I’m the victim. She’s always like this; he’s always like this—shouting, yelling, threatening divorce. See how the kids are in fear 24/7 because of that person? They’re a monster.” They take that recording and show it to their new source of supply, who then thinks, “Oh, poor you, I’ll show you what true love means.” They create animosity that shouldn’t be there, successfully fooling others into thinking you are the problem, when in fact, it’s the person sitting next to them.
