They avoid emotional discomfort more than people realize. One of the biggest myths about narcissistic people is that they do not feel deeply. Many actually experience strong emotions. The issue is often not absence of emotion but difficulty tolerating certain emotions once they appear.

Shame is especially important here.

For someone whose identity depends heavily on appearing successful, desirable, admired, intelligent, or emotionally untouchable, experiences that challenge those identities can feel overwhelming. Instead of staying with discomfort long enough to understand it, escape mechanisms begin appearing.

Work becomes endless. New goals appear immediately. Entertainment becomes constant. Relationships overlap. Activity replaces reflection.

From the outside this can look like confidence or resilience, but sometimes it functions more like emotional avoidance. Imagine placing beautiful furniture across a cracked floor. The room still looks impressive, but pressure underneath continues spreading.

This is why behavior can sometimes seem inconsistent. Someone appears unaffected for weeks and then reacts intensely to something small. Someone acts detached but suddenly becomes obsessed with restoring status or attention. Emotions that are avoided rarely disappear. They wait. And when they return, they usually return stronger than expected.
