6 Disturbing Personality Changes Narcissists Go Through As they Get Older

Number five: they become more desperate to stay relevant. They want everyone to think about them; they cannot be forgotten. When they were younger they may have had looks, energy, charm, social influence, or emotional leverage. As age takes these away, they panic. They cannot handle the idea that life is moving on without revolving around them. So they force relevance: creating drama, inserting themselves where they are not needed, interfering in people’s lives, and behaving in ways that pull attention back to them. Even negative attention feels better than none at all. That is why some older narcissists become noisier, needier, and more disruptive. It is not because they suddenly lost control for no reason; it happens because they sense their importance fading and it terrifies them.

Number six: they lose strategy, and that exposes them. A younger narcissist can be calculated and deliberate—they know when to speak, when to stay silent, when to pretend, and how to manipulate while maintaining a mask. An aging narcissist often loses that strategic ability. Their bitterness becomes so strong and their triggers so easy to hit that they start reacting without thinking. They expose their jealousy too quickly and reveal their hatred openly. They make reckless choices and say things they should have hidden. They burn bridges they might still have needed. That is why they can look almost clownish at times: trying so hard to stay in control, they end up exposing how unstable and desperate they truly are.
