The sixth reason a narcissist would want you to fail is for attention. Your failure may provide the narcissist with an opportunity to play the hero and draw attention to themselves. Narcissists do not help others because they care, but rather because of what they can gain, usually attention or recognition. In a previous video, I discussed the rotten reasons why narcissists help people. At the end of the day, they crave attention and drama, feeding off the emotional reactions of others. Your failures can create an environment where they can take center stage.
The seventh reason a narcissist would want you to fail is manipulation. Narcissists often use tactics like manipulation and gaslighting to create confusion and self-doubt in others. Some people are more susceptible to manipulation when they experience failure or feelings of inadequacy. During these times, the narcissist may find it easier to manipulate you, making you question your own judgment, competence, or self-worth.
The eighth and final reason I want to discuss regarding why the narcissist would want you to fail is revenge. Narcissists are often highly sensitive to any perceived criticism or disrespect. If they feel slighted or that you have hurt their ego (even unintentionally), a narcissist will want to see you fail as a form of revenge or punishment. If they can do anything to aid in that failure, they will.
