The Second Day: Continued Starvation and Search for Stability
Upon arrival, we relieved ourselves, but nobody talked about breakfast. It was the second day, and I still had nothing in my stomach. We kept running with no fuel. He kept ignoring hunger signals because he was extremely stingy with money. He had a lot of money; he earned decently. It wasn’t that he didn’t have money—he just didn’t like to spend it. The crazy thing is, back then, he wore my used clothes but wouldn’t buy anything new for himself. That’s how he was. On the second day, without any breakfast, without any food in my stomach, we continued our search for a new coaching center, a study place, and a new room for me. By 1:00 p.m., we were still finalizing things. Finally, we settled on a coaching center, but still, nobody mentioned eating. I was internally screaming, “What the hell? Give me something to eat! What are you doing? It’s just a matter of a couple of bucks. Just get me something. I don’t have any money on me, so I depend on you. Where are your parental instincts? Where is your empathy? Why don’t you care?” This is what I was asking deep down, but I never voiced it for obvious reasons.
Finally, we settled on a room as well as the coaching center. Now the problem was finding a place for the night because the owner of the apartment didn’t allow us to start living there that night; they had some things to take care of. We were told we could move in the next day. That evening, we were still hungry. We saw food, but he said, “Oh, that’s unhygienic,” or “Oh, that’s not for us,” or “Don’t go near that.” By this point, my mouth tasted metallic, and I was feeling a type of hunger I had never experienced in my entire life. Yet, he kept going. I didn’t understand what was driving him, but he just kept going. He eventually found us a place to rest, and no surprises there—it was the cheapest, dirtiest, stinkiest one. I can’t even describe how low it was.
