The second thing the Narcissist might do is initiate a smear campaign to punish you. This is where they spread lies or rumors to manipulate others and turn them against you. Your refusal to chase them signals that they do not control you or that they are not a priority in your life. The smear campaign allows the Narcissist to maintain some sense of control if they can influence how others perceive or treat you.
Moving On
The third reaction may be losing interest and moving on to someone else who will validate them and give them the attention they crave. By not chasing them, the Narcissist may conclude that you’re not worth their time and that there is someone else who will do what you refuse to do. The Narcissist gets a huge ego boost from being chased and will happily discard someone if they believe they can find someone better to feed their ego.
Anger and Retaliation
The fourth reaction is anger and retaliation. Not chasing them could have caused a Narcissistic Injury because the Narcissist considers you insignificant, so how dare you not chase them? They expected you to grovel at their feet, begging them to talk to you again. The Narcissist cannot handle rejection, especially from someone they perceive as beneath them. So, they may lash out at you, blame you, belittle you, or insult you whenever they can. More often than not, when you do not respond as the Narcissist expects, they will seek to punish you for it.
