My sister did this to me a year ago. I tried to express my feelings, and as soon as I reacted emotionally, she became calm and listened. Before, she wasn’t interested in hearing me, but once I showed vulnerability, she remained silent. At the end, she said nothing, leaving me feeling even more confused.

Finally, they listen when they’re around someone more influential or powerful. Narcissists see people hierarchically—either above or below them. They’ll show interest in someone they view as above them, not to learn, but to steal their methods.
If the influential person has achieved financial success, the narcissist will try to extract shortcuts or tricks, assuming they cheated or took an easy way out. They believe everyone is like them—willing to scam their way to success. This is when they listen carefully, absorbing information to manipulate it later.
