When the narcissistic person’s MASK falls off

In more extreme cases, narcissists can develop persecutory thinking, believing there’s a conspiracy or a group actively working to bring them down. This idea is especially ironic given their own readiness to launch smear campaigns against others. When things fall apart, they can even turn to social media, further amplifying their victimhood.

Sometimes, when a narcissist experiences this type of public collapse, they may resort to a “good optics” intervention. They might check into therapy or treatment to address their anger issues. While therapy may not fix their narcissism, it can serve as a public gesture of accountability. If you’re in a relationship with them, this might at least give you a break, as they’re out of the house for a while. However, the effects likely won’t last long.

In some cases, this collapse might lead them to adopt a more spiritual facade. They may start talking about meditation, mindfulness, and inner peace, appearing calm and reformed. But they can quickly become obsessed with this new persona, using it to gaslight you. If you disrupt their “chakras,” for example, they might tell you that you’re holding onto too much anger, despite years of their own rage.
