Listen, knowing the why of why narcissistic folks don’t do well with sick people can give context, but ultimately, it’s about the what. And the what here is that they simply cannot be day-to-day caregivers. They may be able to engage in some performative caregiving and take advantage of that. Consider it, I don’t know, when they do performatively caregive, it’s sort of like your respite care from time to time, but then they will remind you eternally that they did help with this or that. So, the long-term debt may not be worth it, but it is crucial to be aware of this. So many people experience a whole new level of heartache in their narcissistic relationship when they thought that illness would perhaps draw them closer to the narcissistic person, or at least that person would step in and help them out. And when that didn’t happen, it started a new cascade of grief. Make sure you have some sort of reserve caregiving plan for yourself down the road if a lot of the primary folks around you are narcissistic. Unfortunately, there’s no such thing as narcissism long-term care insurance. It’s something you’re going to need to figure out yourself because when you’re sick, it’s really hard to figure that stuff out on the fly. You need to think about this in advance because if you’re counting on a narcissist to take care of you when you’re sick, especially when you’re older, you’re likely to be very disappointed, and it could even be dangerous.
