Four: while you are grocery shopping. You would think that a simple, boring trip to the supermarket would be safe. It’s just food, right? But to a narcissist, even grocery shopping is a prime opportunity for absolute control and deep humiliation.
They will walk behind you with a cart and turn the entire trip into an interrogation. They will fiercely question every single item you dare to put in the basket. They will aggressively accuse you of wasting their hard-earned money. They will complain about buying the most basic necessities that the family literally needs to survive. They will rush you through the aisles so you feel panicked, constantly criticize your choices, or create a huge, embarrassing argument over a $2 item.
Meanwhile, they will gladly throw expensive premium items into the cart for themselves without a second thought. But if you try to buy one small, ordinary treat for yourself, they will make you feel like a selfish, guilty criminal.
