The kid on Chestnut Street was found guilty in the end. He never stopped arguing, though. He stayed the same way even on the day of his sentencing: angry, sure, and feeling wronged. He still thought of himself as the loser.
Over the years, I’ve thought about him a lot. I haven’t been mad at him, but I’ve been sad about what it must be like to live that way. To live in a mind that cannot accept accountability makes life wildly harder than it needs to be. It may look like confidence from the outside, but it has to be exhausting.
The narcissist probably doesn’t know they’re lying, and it couldn’t matter any less.
