This is when the paranoia truly sets in. They realize they are losing control of the narrative. To a narcissist, controlling the narrative is a matter of life and death. When people start comparing notes and seeing through the lies, the narcissist experiences a psychological freefall. Their kingdom of mirrors shatters.
You might not be there to see it, and that is actually for your own protection. But know this: the collapse is messy. They lash out at everyone. They burn bridges that took years to build. In their desperate attempt to regain dominance, they expose their true hideous nature to the very people they were trying to fool.
The universe forces them to face the one thing they have been running from their entire life: accountability. It doesn’t come as a gentle lesson. It comes as a hard, undeniable wall. Opportunities dry up. Health issues surface, often tied to years of repressed rage and toxic stress. Their physical reality starts to break.
They try to pull you back in. You might get that random message or hear through the grapevine that they are struggling. That is not genuine remorse. That is a drowning person trying to find a raft. But you have built your boundaries. You don’t reach out, and your silence is the loudest confirmation of their total defeat.
As the external world rejects them, their internal world becomes a torture chamber. The memories of people who genuinely love them—people like you—start to haunt them. They will never admit it out loud, but in the dead of night, they realize they threw away diamonds to collect shiny rocks. The regret is suffocating.
They try to distract themselves, but the distractions stop working. The alcohol doesn’t numb it. The new affairs feel hollow. The grandiose purchases just gather dust.
