Shocked! The Narcissist Wasn’t Ready to See This Side of You
You didn’t stay because you couldn’t leave. While that is true in certain cases, you stayed because you still believed there was something worth saving. You weren’t explaining yourself to get their approval. You were explaining yourself because you still believed communication could reach them. You weren’t forgiving because you had no standards. You were forgiving because you kept giving the relationship one more opportunity to become what you thought it could be.
Then the narcissist made one of the biggest mistakes they could make. They confused what you chose to give with what they felt entitled to receive. They assumed your deep love meant complete weakness. That is why your change shocks them so much. When someone has watched you forgive them ten times, they assume the eleventh forgiveness is already waiting. When someone has watched you break no contact before, they assume silence has no real expiration. When someone has watched you cry, explain, plead, argue, and still remain emotionally attached, they begin believing that no matter how badly they behave, your attachment will still be stronger than your self-respect. They count on your trauma bond to do their dirty work.
Then one day, something changes—usually much quieter than they expected. You stop trying to make them understand. You stop correcting every lie they tell about you. You stop needing them to acknowledge what they did. You stop checking whether they are angry. You stop rearranging your mood around their mood. And this is the side of you they were never prepared for.
