There is no such thing as relaxed for a narcissist. Even in sleep, their mind is often churning with grandiosity or vengeful fantasies. This lack of restorative rest means their cells never truly repair. Over time, this leads to a visible thinning of the skin and a hollowing of the face that no amount of cosmetic work can truly hide.
They live on the hits of adrenaline they get from conflict and control. It’s an addiction, plain and simple. And like any addict, when the drug of supply is removed, withdrawal is physical. They aren’t just sad—they are experiencing a systemic breakdown. Their body is literally starving for the validation it needs to feel real.
Have you noticed how they seem to carry a permanent scowl even when they’re trying to smile? That’s because bitterness is an inflammatory condition. Chronic resentment and anger trigger the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines throughout the body. They are literally boiling in their own rage, and it shows in every new wrinkle.
The narcissist’s mask requires an incredible amount of muscular effort to maintain. They are always performing, always posing, always managing their image. When the supply is gone and the despair sets in, those muscles finally give up. The face sags, the jaw tightens, and the eyes take on a look of permanent, exhausted defeat.
You must realize that their supply was more than just a compliment to them. It was a biological necessity. It regulated their heart rate and their blood pressure. Without a target to mirror, the narcissist loses their sense of self-coherence.
They become a chaotic mess of biological signals that don’t know how to find a baseline. They are hunters who have run out of prey. The energy they used to spend on the hunt is now being turned inward, fueling an obsessive cycle of self-pity and rumination.
