The Dangerous Type of Narcissist No One Talks About (Not Covert or Psychopathic)
People from the outside often ask why anyone stays with someone who is broke and unsuccessful. What they may not understand is the psychology of living with someone whose identity is built on inferiority, envy, entitlement, sexual validation, resentment, and the need to destroy your self-worth. They may not have built a life of their own, but they can spend years trying to destroy yours.
So let’s understand this.
The greatest power an unsuccessful narcissist uses to exploit others is social image. They may only have a small amount of money, but in society they may have built an image of being extraordinary. People may say they are so helpful and kind, and they may appear well-connected. Their friend circle can be unusually large—but those relationships may share one common purpose: the narcissist uses almost everyone.
They know exactly whom to flatter, whom to please, and whom to bow down to. They deliberately build connections with powerful, wealthy, or influential people through the relationship, because those connections can be used later. In front of people who can benefit them, they may be extremely submissive. They know whose ego to massage, whose approval to chase, and who to call when they need money, support, influence, or a favor.
The intelligence they should have used to build their own career or success may get invested in shortcuts, manipulation, and social survival instead of discipline, consistency, and real growth. Their social influence can become so strong that when you finally try to explain that the person is abusive and not what they seem, people may refuse to believe you.
They may keep relationships with childhood friends, distant relatives, old colleagues, neighbors, and powerful acquaintances. These connections may not be maintained out of love—they may be maintained as protection for their reputation. They may create a network of people who only know the public version of them while the people closest to them live with the private version. They may also live through you while secretly resenting you.
