Are they a Narcissist or just Avoidant?? Here’s how to tell…

How do you know if someone is a narcissist, or just avoidantly attached? And what do you do if you’re in a relationship with either one?

It can be tricky to tell them apart. But there are a few important clues that make all the difference.

Like most things in life, this exists on a spectrum. Everyone can show narcissistic tendencies without being a narcissist. Everyone can feel anxious or avoidant depending on how a partner is showing up — without actually having that attachment style. Labels aren’t the goal here.

Ideally, you’re not calling your partner a narcissist or an avoidant, because that label rarely helps. There are almost always more respectful, vulnerable ways to name the problem. At the end of the day, what matters is behavior:

Is this relationship working for you? Are they consistent? Do their words match their actions? Do they care about your feelings, needs, desires, or dreams?

If the answer is no, the label barely matters. Call it what it is: not the right fit. It’s hard to feel close to someone who doesn’t value kindness, consideration, trust, or intimacy — because you won’t.
