What happens When You See Through a Narcissist’s Soul

You’re no longer tricked by the show they put on for the world, because your inner compass has locked on to the truth. Now, as you move deeper into this awareness, you start noticing very subtle expressions that most people completely miss. You begin to catch the exact moments where the human mask glitches and slips away right in front of your eyes.

A narcissist works incredibly hard to look happy, kind, or perfectly normal. But maintaining a fake personality requires constant, exhausting work. When they think they need you alive, they’re living, breathing, lie. When they think no one is watching—or when they are transitioning between conversations—their face completely changes. You will see a sudden vacant stare in their eyes.

These quiet moments reveal the mechanical nature of the narcissist. You may see them sitting on the couch when they think the room is empty, or staring blankly at their phone, and their face looks entirely detached from any human warmth. It looks as if the puppet strings have suddenly gone slack, and the actor has stopped performing.

If they notice you looking at them during one of those glitches, you will see a flash of absolute contempt or pitch-black indifference cross their face for a fraction of a second before they quickly force their fake smile back into place. But you cannot unsee what you just witnessed, can you? You realize the charming, laughing person everyone else sees is just a damn costume.

Underneath that costume is a cold, calculated machine that is constantly running on empty. Watching these glitches happen does not make you angry anymore. It sends a chill down your spine because you realize how hollow they truly are.

Living with a narcissist also means living inside a constant atmospheric drop that wears down your spirit day by day, even before you fully understand what is happening. Your physical body usually gives you warning signs that something is deeply wrong. You just can’t tolerate them anymore. You may feel your stomach twist into knots. Your chest tightens, or a sudden wave of unexplainable exhaustion washes over you the moment they come home or walk into the room.
