This leads you into the suffocating fog of cognitive dissonance, perhaps the most exhausting mental state a human can experience. Your mind becomes a battlefield where two completely opposing realities fight for dominance. On one side, you have the memory of the person who once loved you—the one who was attentive, kind, and seemed like your soulmate. On the other side, you have the monster in front of you—the person who is currently being dismissive, cold, or intentionally cruel.

Because your brain literally cannot process how one person can be both of these things. It tries to find a logical bridge to connect them. And sadly, that bridge is usually self-blame. You tell yourself, “If I hadn’t brought that up, or if I was just more patient, or if I were just better in some way, the old them would come back.” You become the investigator of your own downfall, searching for a flaw in yourself that doesn’t actually exist.

You have to understand that this internal war isn’t your fault, and it’s not a sign of weakness. It’s a sign that your brain is trying to make sense of a dynamic that is fundamentally nonsensical. You’re trying to apply human logic and empathy to a person who is operating on a script of power and control.

The safety they offered you in the beginning was never a foundation. It was the bait. They had to make you feel secure so that you would give them the ammunition they’re using against you now.

You aren’t failing at the relationship. You’re simply the latest victim of a cycle that was broken long before you ever met them. They didn’t change into a monster. The mask just finally got too heavy to wear.
