A few things, most notably the fact that their desire for you is likely to skyrocket. Narcissists always want what they can’t have. If it’s out of reach, the desire factor goes up. This is partly due to the forbidden fruit effect, which is real. It’s natural for people to want something more when it’s off-limits or harder to get—but for someone with a destructive narcissistic personality pattern, the effect is intensified by the deep emptiness at the core of their personality.

They also spend a lot of time in fantasy, sometimes to the point of delusion—especially about themselves, their worth, and their gifts and talents. That’s why, when they realize you’re truly gone and they have to face themselves and the void created by your absence, they often respond with superiority and entitlement.

Make no mistake: they feel that void. And in that void, they long for the one who “got away.”

Here’s the truth: narcissists don’t go after just anyone. If you’ve been pursued by a destructive narcissist beyond a brief situation, it’s because you have qualities they value. At the very least, you make them look good in their mind. And this is true in every kind of relationship with them—not just romantic ones.
