Narcissists are not nice people. Even if many people are fooled by their behavior, they know who they are—and so do you.
Once they realize they can’t access you, can’t control you, can’t target you, and can’t exploit you anymore, they often launch a full-blown smear campaign.
If you hold the line—if you stand firm and refuse to give in—they will still smear you. Why? Because they need to cast you as the villain in their story. They must place themselves either as the hero or the victim, and you become the “big bad” to their audience.
They will say whatever they think will work—no matter how untrue, cruel, or bizarre—because their goal is to assassinate your character and reputation.
This can be deeply painful, especially early in healing. That’s why real recovery work and a strong support system matter. Over time, you can get to a place where you’re largely unaffected by their noise.
When they can’t control you directly anymore, they try to control perceptions of you. Their focus shifts. Their game stays the same. They smear, distort, and manipulate the narrative.
If you know this in advance, you can prepare. Expect the worst case scenario and do your work. Take the best care of yourself. Protect yourself in every way you can. When you do, you’re far less likely to be derailed by whatever they say or whoever believes them.
On that note, the core message is simple: their next move doesn’t have to dictate yours.
