When a narcissist thinks you’re too strong, this is the next thing they’ll do.
This jealousy isn’t the kind where they want what you have. It’s the kind where they want to destroy what you have so that you’re back down on their level. Their logic is warped, but consistent: “If I can’t be high, I must make you low.”
They cannot climb the mountain of emotional maturity, so they try to pull the mountain down to the swamp. This is why you’ll notice they start attacking the very things that make you strong.
If it’s your career, they’ll sabotage it. If it’s your new friends, they’ll poison the well. They are looking for the source of your power so they can cut the wires and watch you go dark. It’s a process of reverse engineering your healing.
They look at your boundaries and see them as a puzzle to be solved. They will test different angles—guilt, pity, full vulnerability—to see if any of the old doorways are still unlocked. They aren’t looking for a connection. They are looking for an entry point. They need to know if that strength is permanent or just a temporary phase.
They are waiting for one moment of weakness to prove you haven’t changed. When they realize the strength is permanent, the fun ends and the work begins.
The narcissist enters a state of cold, calculated malice. They stop reacting emotionally to your boundaries and start planning their exit—but not before they try to leave you in ruins.
This is the stage where they move from being a difficult partner or family member to being a full-time saboteur. They are now committed to a mission: the total annihilation of your reputation.
You see, if you are strong, you are a witness to the truth of who they are. And weaknesses are dangerous.
You know where the bodies are buried—metaphorically speaking. You’ve seen the mask slip more than anyone else. If you leave or stay strong, you might tell someone the truth.
To prevent this, they have to make sure that no one will believe you. They have to preemptively destroy your credibility before you have the chance to use your voice against them.
