By the time you realize what’s happening, the narrative is already set. People you’ve known for years might start looking at you differently. There is a strange tension in the air at social gatherings. The narcissist has poisoned the well, and you’re the only one who doesn’t know the water is toxic.
Yet, this turning point is often where survivors feel the most isolated. You finally got strong. You finally found your boundaries. And yet it feels like the world is punishing you for it. It’s a dark irony.
The narcissist is using your healthy behavior to paint you as the villain. They are leveraging the social capital they helped build to bankrupt your reputation. It feels like a betrayal of the highest order—and in many ways, that is exactly what it is.
But notice the timing. They didn’t do this when they thought they could still control you. They only started this campaign because they realized you were truly gone. This is the ultimate next thing.
It’s the scorched-earth policy. If they can’t have your devotion, they will have your destruction. They would rather see you miserable and alone than happy and free from their influence. It’s the ultimate proof that they never ever truly cared about your well-being.
