So they tell themselves a wild lie. They believe you are actively trying to sabotage them. They convince themselves that you are watching their every move. If they cannot get a job, what do they do? They tell themselves you are calling their bosses. If their new friends leave them because of who they are, they think you’re spreading rumors.
They tell themselves, “The only reason I’m struggling to get back, to make a comeback, is because they’re insanely jealous of them and you’re trying to block their success.” This lie is crucial for their survival. It makes them feel important and you, the opponent. If you’re supposedly spending all your time trying to ruin them, it means they’re still powerful, right? It means they still matter.
They need to believe you’re jealous, because the reality—that you’re just completely exhausted and don’t give a damn about them anymore—would completely crush their fake sense of power.
The fourth lie: They tell themselves that their new fake life is a masterpiece that you will die for. When a narcissist hits rock bottom, they do not take time to heal. They scramble. They immediately try to build a pseudo-life.
A pseudo-life is a fake, temporary reality made of cardboard and tape. They rush out and find a new partner in three days. They take on a new personality entirely. They post 100,000 pictures on social media showing off big smiles, new clothes, and loud parties. They look at this cardboard house and tell themselves, “Self-gaslighting: I’m finally happy. I never needed them anyway. This is my best life. They were the only obstacle.” They lie to themselves every single morning. They pretend that this new setup is the greatest thing that has ever happened to them—but it is completely hollow if you think about it.
