Even on the rare occasion when a narcissist can’t completely deny what happened, they instantly perform psychological gymnastics to downplay its severity. Their brain immediately moves the goalposts for what abuse actually means so that their behavior always lands safely on the innocent side.

They’ll sit there and say ridiculous things like, “If it happened, it wasn’t that bad,” or, “I never hit you, so why are you complaining?” or, “At least I never cheated on you like your friend’s partner did.”

They create extreme, absurd comparisons in their minds, where only physical violence or extreme criminality counts as real abuse. Everything is black and white. As long as they can find someone in the world who [snorts] did something worse than they did, they convince themselves that their emotional destruction of you was completely acceptable. So, the problem is you.

They continuously rewrite the dictionary in their minds so they can walk away feeling like a good angel, no matter how many people they leave behind.
