5 Things That are Impossible to do When Living with a Narcissist

Number one: sleeping peacefully throughout the night.
It becomes almost impossible to sleep peacefully when you share a home with a terrible narcissist. For a normal person, bedtime is a chance to rest, recover, and recharge for the next day. But for a narcissist, bedtime is just another prime opportunity to exercise power and control over you.

The exact moment you put your head on the pillow and show that you’re ready to sleep, they suddenly want to argue. They will intentionally bring up an old issue from six months ago, or they will keep talking loudly after you’ve politely asked them to stop. They do this on purpose to deliberately keep your nervous system emotionally activated.

If they can’t start a verbal fight, they will disturb you in physical ways. They will turn on bright lights. They will constantly mess with the temperature of the room so you’re freezing or sweating. They will repeatedly move around, slam cabinet doors, turn the television volume up, or create entirely unnecessary disruptions when they know you’re desperately trying to rest.

They want you waking up the next morning feeling completely drained. Why? Because an exhausted person is much easier to control, manipulate, and defeat in an argument.

If you remember the sheer exhaustion of having your sleep intentionally ruined week after week, drop the word “tired” in the comments right now. Let your body finally rest today.

Two: maintaining a normal social life.
It is impossible to maintain a healthy social life with a narcissist. Why? Because they slowly make every single friendship incredibly difficult to maintain.

They don’t always isolate you by literally locking you inside the house—which sometimes they do. Instead, they use a much darker, evil strategy: they make leaving the house emotionally exhausting. Whenever you have plans to go out, they will suddenly create a massive fight right before you walk out the door. They want you arriving at your friend’s house feeling anxious, upset, and completely drained.

If that doesn’t work, they will heavily criticize your friends behind their backs. They will accuse people of being a bad influence on you. They will make you feel intensely guilty for daring to enjoy yourself without them being present. They will text you constantly while you’re out, creating sudden, fake emergencies—so you have to drop your plans and rush back home.

Eventually, you stop making plans. You stop seeing people because you realize that every single social interaction comes with a heavy price tag. You isolate yourself just to avoid the punishing arguments that happen every time you try to connect with the outside world.
