5 Things That are Impossible to do When Living with a Narcissist

Fifth one: co-parenting peacefully.
If you have children together, you know what I’m talking about. Co-parenting is impossible—especially doing it peacefully—with a narcissist.

In a normal separation or marriage, parents put their differences aside for the absolute sake of the kids, don’t they? But for a narcissist, their deep hatred and jealousy toward you will always become stronger than their willingness to protect their own child from conflict.

They will gladly use the children as weapons to destroy your peace. If hurting you means deeply confusing the child, they will do it. If it means actively turning the child against you, breaking healthy daily routines, or deliberately withholding important medical, dental, or school information, they will do it without a second thought.

They actively “counter-parent.” They will spoil the children with expensive gifts just to buy their blind loyalty and make you look like the strict, boring parent. They will constantly use the kids as messengers to deliver cruel threats—forcing them straight into the middle of adult problems.

You’re desperately trying to raise a healthy, stable child together, but they’re only trying to win a sick competition against you. They don’t care about the collateral damage they cause—as long as they get to watch you suffer.

Now, if you’re fighting hard to protect your children and break this generational cycle, I’m proud of you. And I would like you to drop the word “protector” in the comments right now, because you are one. Your strength is their ultimate safety.

Living with a narcissist is not just a difficult relationship. It’s a daily survival test that drains every ounce of you. They aggressively attack your sleep, your money, your friendships, your health, and your family. Why? All to ensure you never feel strong enough to stand on your own feet. It’s deliberate.

But recognizing these deliberate sabotage tactics is the very first step to breaking free. Once you see the pattern, you stop blaming yourself for the exhaustion. You’re not failing at life. You’re simply operating in an environment designed to make you fail.

But you have the power to change the locks, protect your peace, and rebuild a life they tried to tear down. And I would like you to reclaim that today emotionally—even if you’re stuck in the relationship.
